B Is For Birds

Today the letter B is for birds because I enjoy photographing and drawing these wonderful creatures.

Birds are one of my favorite things to photograph, and here is a video I also took of the same bird above. I wish I could identify this bird, but I am going to have to keep searching to try and find its species. Update: someone commenting below tells me the bird is probably the black phoebe, and it does look quite like it.

Here are a few more pictures I have captured of these wonderful creatures over the years.

The photo of the bird above is of a crow flying aloft up in the San Bernardino Mountains. Β I enjoy taking photos of birds as they are in flight. Update: the bird might be a turkey buzzard, of which I know a few visit the San Bernardino Mountains.

Above are two photographs I took of chickadees eating bird seed up in the San Bernardino Mountains. One of my fond memories as a child was putting out bird seed during the winter months and watching all of our feathered friends (usually the chickadees) congregate with socialize and eat. These photographs of birds bring back memories, and every time I see a chickadee, I remember how I used to feed them as a child. What is your favorite bird to photograph?

  1. I like taking pictures of birds, too, but it is hard for me to do with my cellphone, because they fly away before I can see them up close.

I like your pictures of birds!

    1. You know this camera I got recently has a pretty good zoom, and it was only about sixty dollars. I think your cell phone takes good pictures, though. I also like taking pictures with my cell phone when I forget my camera, but I do get charged for data usage each time I send a photo I took on it to my email. Thus, it is a bit cheaper for me to just use my digital camera since I do not have to pay extra to use it.

    1. I know what you mean about the difficulty of photographing birds. Even when you have the perfect opportunity to compose a shot, sometimes other variables will get in the way. For instance, the other day I had the idea opportunity to take a picture of two baby birds, but then my camera battery died.

  2. I enjoy taking bird pictures too. The one you have flying looks a bit large for a crow, more like a raven or a buzzard. We have lots of ravens here in our mountains and they are such interesting birds to watch.

    1. I have networked blogs for following, but that is the only blog following tool I have at the moment. If you do not want to use that one, I know you can save my blog to your favorite websites, and then check back frequently.

    1. I am going to create another option for subscribing. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I have networked blogs, but some people might not like this option.

    1. It would be amazing to see the Australian birds you are talking about, but I think it would be fun to visit Australia, period.

  3. Birds invoke a feeling of freedom for me, although I’m sure their lives are complicated, too, and probably far from free. Still, watching them fly does that. Very nice photos and video. Not sure if the noise scared away the bird in the video, but that’s where it stopped at my end.

    1. I think birds have to be crafty learning how to adapt with the changing urban environments, and people encroached on their end. The bird did not stay long, and maybe my walking by did make it fly away, but there are always noises coming and going since I live in a suburban area. The birds sing and spend quite a bit of time around here though, so they always come back.

  4. I too don’t know the name of the bird in your first picture, but we have one in our neighborhood that I enjoy looking at. I miss the quails from where we used to live; they and the road runners were cool!

    1. My mom told me she spotted some quails tonight. I am wondering about that bird in the first photograph as well because I see it everywhere around Southern California, but do not know its name.

    1. It is hard to photograph moving birds, I agree. Flamingos on the law are fun because they are quite stationery.

  5. I like birds and do some of the bird surveys n the UK (which reminds me, it’s time to start the dawn surveys I do again!).
I think your bird in the top pic is a Black Phoebe – as you mention Santa Fe I guess you’re in the right area. (CA and southern states east to mid-Texas) The video shows fairly typical flycatcher behaviour, and it’s of that family.
The crow looks quite long-winged to me, but I can’t get a good view of it πŸ™‚ Maybe a buzzard. as someone else suggested.
I took your advice from an earlier post and put the camera you have on my wish list – maybe for my birthday in the summer πŸ™‚

    1. Oh yes, one of my posts shows the Santa Fe Depot, which is a railroad that ran to Southern California, where I live I think you must be right about the bird being the Black Phoebe, and I am glad I you know about birds to tell me. The other bird is perhaps a turkey buzzard. I probably should go change that info, but have not go around to it.

  6. I LOVE taking photos of the birds out behind my house…mallards, finches, flickers, owls, hawks, doves, robins… I’m including just a few in my D blog at storycrossings.com/blog – Stop on by tomorrow! I enjoy your photos. πŸ™‚
