C Is For Canning

Today we are talking about the letter C, so I decided share how I enjoy my mom canning organic apples from her trees. I decided to take a photograph of a jar of apples she canned for me recently. Mason canning jars are also fun to use in crafting projects after they are retired from their main job.

So even though organic apples are fresh are delightful, I enjoy having a few jars of home organic grown apples on hand for when I make one of my favorite things, which is this:

During the fall and winter months I am constantly making apple pies, and I also make a few pumpkin pies. I think I will always have a special place in my palate for the cinnamon spiked apple pies that I bake with my mom’s organic apples. Having a few jars of organic apples means I can make pies for several months after the harvest. Do you enjoy making apple pie?

  1. Those are great ways to use apples.

It’s a shame we have to use a weird term like “organic” to describe apples grown naturally. The weird term ought to be used only on apples grown in a less natural way.

    1. The term organic gardening has been around since the 1940’s in gardening circles. Back in the 1980’s when everyone still wanted to use sprays and stuff, it was considered odd to not spray your fruits and vegetables. and to subscribe to magazines that taught you how to grow things the natural way, but I know what you mean. I just find it funny now that it is so en vogue to actually do things the way people did it for thousands of years.

    1. I am sure you could make a lovely apple pie. Not as hard to do as it seems. All Recipes has some great tips for making pies.

    1. Maybe you should put it on your Amazon wishlist so friends can buy that for you during Christmas or birthdays.

  2. The pie looks delicious! I haven’t made one in a while, but I did like making one every now and then. Never canned apples though. My mom would make strawberry jelly out of strawberries but that’s about the extent of our canning.

    1. Strawberry jelly sounds good. My mom has about five apple trees, so I am happy for the canned apples when the fresh ones run out.
