Ring Around The Moon

In the past when people did not have access to calendars, some cultures tracked months by the appearance of a full moon. The ring around the moon here looks ethereal but has a scientific explanation. Ice crystals cause the refraction of light from the moon that creates a luminous ring around the earth’s lunar satellite.

Ice crystals in the clouds refract light from the moon, which creates a lustrous band around the lunar satellite.
Zooming in a bit more on the moon. The details of the craters come into focus.
